Page Turners Celebrate First Anniversary
“There is no frigate like a book to take us
lands away.”
Emily Dickinson
The Page Turners, a book club founded by staff members
in the Faculty of Medicine, recently celebrated its first
anniversary. Co-founders, Ms. Anne Weeden and Ms. Dilly
MacFarlane, discovered their mutual passion for reading
and believed that others would benefit from the fellowship
and enjoyment of a staff book club. As a result, The
Page Turners group was born and held its first meeting
in June 2003 with the assistance of the Healthy Living
Program, the Dean’s Office, and the Dalhousie Medical
Alumni Association.
During its first year, the club has discussed eight
books ranging from classics like Catcher in the Rye and
A Confederacy of Dunces to a current best seller, Must
Love Dogs. In order to expand and enrich its own discussion,
The Page Turners has invited experts from various areas
across the Faculty and the university. Guests have included Dr. Susan Bryson, Department of Pediatrics; Dr. Francois
Baylis, Department of Bioethics; and Dr. David MacNeil,
Department of English. The book club also has its own
page on DalMedix, allowing members to continue their
discussion outside the monthly meetings through use of
the group’s electronic notice board.
All are welcome to join the club. For more information,
