Dr. Stephen Drance Honored at Convocation
Dr. Stephen M. Drance was awarded an honorary degree at the Medical School's
Convocation Ceremonies on Friday, May 26 for his outstanding work in the field
of Ophthalmology. Dr. Drance is Professor Emeritus and Head of the Department
of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia. He is a leading Canadian
scientist with a particular focus on Glaucoma. He is also the author of more
than 300 journal articles and is the co-author of five books. Dr. Drance's
expertise has taken him around the world. He has been a visiting professor
or guest lecturer across Canada and the United States as well as in Australia,
New Zealand, France, Mexico, England, Panama, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium,
Japan, Poland, Italy, Greece, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
The Eye Care Centre was established in Vancouver in 1983 due to the eight
million dollars Dr. Drance helped raise. The Vancouver General Hospital and
the University of British Columbia centre has become the location of leading
research in Ophthalmology. Dr. Drance is also a founding member of the B.C.
Medical Foundation and is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
