First Marvin Burke Scholar
Visits Dalhousie University
The Marvin Burke Visiting Scholar Program began last month with a series of
five lectures, sponsored by Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Department
of Health. Dr. Edith Gomberg, Professor in the Alcohol Research Center, Department
of Psychiatry, University of Michigan, was the Program's first Visiting Scholar.
The theme of the first lecture series was Women and Addiction. Dr. Gomberg
is internationally renowned in the field of women and substance abuse, and
has published several works on the subject. Marvin Burke was Executive Director
and Deputy Minister of the Nova Scotia Commission on Drug Dependency from
1971 until his death in 1991.
The Marvin Burke Visiting Scholar Program will be an annual lecture series
with a new theme each year. The planning committee invites members of the
Faculty of Medicine to suggest themes or potential speakers for next year's
Visiting Scholar, and submit them to Dr. Christiane Poulin, Community Health
and Epidemiology.
